Volunteers Sought to Assist LGBTQ+ Persons in Allegheny County
- 12/11/2024
- Allegheny County Bar Foundation - Pro Bono Center
Given the uncertain future of LGBTQ+ rights, demand for legal aid has increased significantly. In response, Hugh Lane Wellness Foundation is launching a series of pro bono and pro se clinics to assist LGBTQ+ and HIV+ people with low incomes who are facing high-need legal issues.
In preparation for these clinics, Hugh Lane is seeking volunteers with experience or interest in name changes, family law, and wills and estate law. Law student volunteers are also welcome. Training will be available for each name change clinic, so the required experience level is minimal. Some experience is required for family law and wills and estate law clinics.
Common requests for assistance in these areas include help with wills, powers of attorney, and information about confirmatory adoptions. Hugh Lane carries pro bono liability coverage for volunteers through the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. More information will be sent to registered volunteers closer to each clinic date when attendee estimates are available.
Upcoming clinics:
- Name Change Clinic, Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1-5pm, Homewood Community Engagement Center
- Wills & Estates Clinic, Saturday, Dec. 21, 11am - 3pm, Hugh Lane East Liberty
- Name Change Clinic, Saturday, Jan. 4, 11am - 3pm, Hugh Lane East Liberty
