ABA Military Pro Bono Project

Volunteer Attorney Newsletter

Winter 2021

Thank you for being a volunteer with the ABA Military Pro Bono Project!

There are two ways to participate:
Military Pro Bono Project: Pro Bono Representation

The Military Pro Bono Project accepts case referrals from military legal assistance offices anywhere in the world on behalf of junior enlisted servicemembers facing civil legal issues, and it places these cases with pro bono attorneys where the legal assistance is needed in the U.S. You can view pro bono case opportunities at any time on our website, which is updated daily.

Operation Stand-By: Guidance to Military and Pro Bono Attorneys

Through the Military Pro Bono Project, you may also elect to participate in Operation Stand-By. Operation Stand-By allows you to offer to be on "stand-by" to provide attorney-to-attorney advice to military attorneys and other pro bono attorneys, so they can further assist their servicemember and veteran clients.

Join by logging onto our website and updating your profile by clicking on “Join Operation Stand-By” and selecting your area(s) of expertise.

Case Spotlight

With Volunteer Attorney’s Help, Soldier Obtains Order for Overpaid Child Support

While an Army servicemember was stationed overseas, he received an order to pay child support, which he immediately began paying each month. He was therefore surprised to receive a Notice of Lien for several thousand dollars months later. Upon looking into his payments, he realized that he had actually paid quite a bit more than what was required. He visited his local legal assistance office for help and his case was referred to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, which placed his case with a pro bono attorney.

With the pro bono attorney’s help, the soldier’s debt was cancelled, and he obtained an order entitling him to over $17,000 in back pay from his child’s mother for the amount he overpaid.

New Opportunity to Help Veterans

ABA Federal Free Legal Answers Fully Launched in January!

ABA Federal Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice portal for veterans – along with eligible dependents and survivors – to ask legal questions, and attorneys can volunteer to provide brief advice to answer questions. Veterans can ask about VA benefits, discharge upgrades, and similar veterans’ legal issues. Attorneys who are licensed and in good standing in their state and are accredited with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are eligible to answer veteran-related civil legal questions. For more information and to sign up with ABA Federal Free Legal Answers, please visit ABAFederal.FreeLegalAnswers.org.

Already signed up on your state's Free Legal Answers page? Please also sign up on Federal Free Legal Answers to answer veterans' questions!

We need your help, and please spread the news!

Please share this information with both attorneys and the veteran community. Download and distribute flyers for both attorneys and veterans
