Lawyers who serve on non
profit boards take on roles that closely mirror co
re aspects of legal practice, including fiduciary
 responsibility, strategic communication, reputatio
n management, and ethical decision making. Serving
as a nonprofit board member requires lawyers to c
ommunicate clearly and responsibly about an organi
zation’s mission, governance, and impact. These sk
ills directly translate to effective client counse
 ling, advocacy, and professional conduct.

Th
is CLE program explores how nonprofit board servic
e enhances lawyers’ professional competence by str
engthening communication skills, judgment, and eth
ical awareness. Panelists address how attorneys se
rving on nonprofit boards act as informed ambassad
ors for their organizations, balancing advocacy wi
th accuracy, discretion, and fiduciary duties. The
program also identifies common challenges faced b
y new board members, including gaps in onboarding,
governance literacy, and role clarity, and how la
wyers can proactively seek information necessary t
 o fulfill their duties.

Attendees learn how
engaging with nonprofit staff, participating in ev
ents, and building relationships sharpen lawyers’
abilities to communicate with diverse stakeholders
, manage risk, and maintain professionalism in pub
lic facing and internal contexts. The program also
examines how board service reinforces core legal
skills such as issue spotting, informed decision m
aking, and ethical leadership. The program conclud
es with practical guidance on identifying appropri
ate board opportunities, evaluating readiness for
service, and advocating for oneself while maintain
 ing professional responsibility.
