Building strong asylum and pro
tection claims in the United States depends on cre
dible facts and well-documented evidence. Yet many
people fleeing persecution are forced to leave th
eir home countries abruptly, without the time, res
ources, or safety needed to gather critical docume
nts. Once in the U.S., obtaining records from abro
ad—specifically from Mexico and Central America—ca
n be complex, slow, and legally challenging.

This program explores the practical and legal rea
lities of transnational evidence collection in pro
tection cases. It is designed to equip advocates w
ith concrete tools to obtain civil registry docume
nts, criminal and police records, medical files, a
nd sworn statements, as well as to arrange remote
testimony from foreign witnesses. Emphasis is plac
ed on navigating country-specific procedures, avoi
ding common evidentiary pitfalls, and ensuring tha
t evidence gathered abroad is legally sound and us
able in U.S. proceedings. What You Will Learn
