A program entitled Veterans Courts in Pennsylvania: Making the Case for Veterans Courts will be presented on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 9:00 Am-1:00 PM at Widener Law Commonwealth, Administration Building, Room A180, 3737 Vartan Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Debra Todd and Pennsylvania Adjutant General Anthony Carrelli will be delivering keynote remarks.

There are now more than 20 veterans courts in the Commonwealth, serving veterans involved in the justice system due to a substance use disorder, mental health disorder, or trauma. Veterans treatment courts are part of more than 100 “problem solving courts” statewide, and are an innovative and collaborative initiative between the courts, the district attorneys, the public defenders, the Veterans Administration, and numerous veterans’ agencies. Veterans who complete their court-supervised programs and graduate may have the charges that brought them to court dismissed and/or their term of supervision reduced. In addition, their criminal records may be expunged. Notably, veterans’ treatment courts have a 74 percent successful graduation rate.

Judges, County Commissioners and Veteran Justice Outreach Coordinators will share their tips for success in establishing and administering Veterans Courts in Pennsylvania.

The session is presented by Widener Law Commonwealth, the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts Problem Solving Court division, the Governor’s Advisory Council on Veterans’ Services, the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association, the Middle District of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, and the Dauphin County Bar Association.
