The 2013 Fair Debt Collection Training Conference, sponsored by the National Consumer Law Center and the National Association of Consumer Advocates will be held on March 7-8, 2013 (Thursday & Friday) at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore, MD.

This is an introductory course to get up to speed on your first debt collection abuse cases. Learn about the laws protecting consumers from abusive debt collection practices and proceed to more in-depth sessions on developing cases and building a fair debt collection law practice.

Who Should Attend:

The introductory training is for NACA members, long-time NACBA members with practices limited to consumer cases, assistant attorneys general, and legal aid lawyers who may litigate against debt collectors.

In addition there is an optional Saturday morning session on Representing Consumer Defendants in State Court at the University of Maryland Law School, about a 16 minute walk from the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel.

This morning session will examine the defenses and strategies available to lawyers representing consumers sued in state court for credit card and similar debts by creditors and debt buyers, with a focus on debt buyers' practices. It will examine flaws in pleadings, affidavits and business records used by collection law firms in these types of cases. It will survey consumer defenses that may be available in these suits. Much of the presentation will be organized as a mock state trial court proceeding involving a suit against a consumer by a debt buyer.
