LSC Honors Volunteer Attorneys in Delaware

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

  • Organization: Legal Services Corporation

Four Delaware attorneys have been honored by the Legal Services Corporation for providing high-quality civil legal assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families.

Helaine M. Barnett, president of LSC, and David Hall, chairman of the LSC Provision for the Delivery of Legal Services Committee, presented certificates of appreciation to the four attorneys--Tara Ann Blakely, Maggie Ruth Clausell, Vivian A. Houghton and William F. Jaworski Jr.

The certificates of appreciation, which recognized the contributions by the four attorneys to the Legal Services Corporation of Delaware, were presented at an Aug. 1 reception held in conjunction with a visit by the LSC Board of Directors to the Delaware program.

"My congratulations to these attorneys for the countless hours they have devoted to successfully representing numerous clients over the years. This recognition of exemplary pro bono service on behalf of clients of an LSC grantee is part of a larger LSC initiative, Help Close the Justice Gap, Unleash the Power of Pro Bono,' and vital to our effort to promote equal access to justice," Helaine Barnett said.

A groundbreaking report, issued by LSC in 2005, documented that one out of every two people who seek help from an LSC-funded program are turned away because of a lack of resources to serve them. To help close this "justice gap," LSC has called on programs to enhance their private attorney involvement in the delivery of legal services.

The board also approved a resolution thanking Lowenstein Sandler LLP and three members of the firm, Douglas S. Eakeley, a former LSC board chairman; Robert D. Chester, and Kathleen A. McBreen for their pro bono representation of LSC.
