The American Bar Association-Section of Taxation is offering a free webcast entitled, The Nuts and Bolts of Pro Bono Tax Controversy Cases: What You Should Know Prior to Representing a Client Before the IRS (Part 1), on October 26, 2010 from 1:00 pm -2:30 pm Eastern.

Providing pro bono assistance to low income taxpayers is a valuable service to the community and a rewarding experience. Many tax practitioners are surprised at how transferable tax controversy skills are to their daily tax practice, whether that is transactional work or litigation.

However, it can seem overwhelming to get a handle on the basics of a tax controversy case if one has limited experience with the US Tax Court or the IRS. This webcast provides the basics of handling a pro bono tax controversy matter from initial client contact through the various types of cases (audits, appeals, litigation, collections, investigations, etc.).

This webcast is the first of a two-part webcast series. It will focus on the overview of controversy work, the types of cases, and IRS examination.

Faculty:

  • Caroline Ciraolo - Partner, Rosenberg, Martin, Greenberg, LLP, Baltimore, Maryland
  • T. Keith Fogg - Associate Professor of Law and Director, Federal Tax Clinic
  • James Leith - Local Taxpayer Advocate, Maryland
  • William P. Nelson - Director, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) Program Office, Taxpayer Advocate Service

Four seasoned tax controversy practitioners will discuss the process and steps necessary to effectively represent your client in tax controversy matters. Join Caroline Ciraolo, Keith Fogg, James Leith and William Nelson for this 3 hour- two part webcast, offering Free CLE credit for the live version as part of the 2010 National Pro Bono Celebration!
